The buildings at Ise are constructed of cypress wood, which
harmonizes seamlessly with the surrounding cryptomeria (cypress) forest.
As seen in this post from one of the "torii" entrance gates, the
wood is smoothly turned and cut, but otherwise left in its natural state,
untreated and unpainted, in keeping with the simple and naturalistic Shinto
aesthetic. The sparing use of bronze ornamental details on the shrine structures
inside the precinct constrasts brilliantly with the matte texture and natural
tone of the wooden structural elements. The shrines' rustic thatched roofs
are made of the same thick miscanthus grass used in rural domestic architecture.
