'New Yorker' Writer to Give Reading at Ithaca College

ITHACA, NY — The Distinguished Visiting Writers Series at Ithaca College will host a free public reading by award-winning author Philip Gourevitch, staff writer for The New Yorker and former editor in chief of The Paris Review. His presentation will take place on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Textor 102.

Gourevitch has reported for The New Yorker from Africa, Asia, Europe and across the United States. He has written about the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda and Cambodia, the dictatorships of Mobutu Sese Seko in Congo and Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka and Jean-Marie Le Pen’s National Front in France. In 2004 he served as the magazine’s Washington correspondent, covering the presidential election campaigns.

His book “We Wish to inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda” won the National Book Critics Circle Award, George Polk Book Award, Los Angeles Times Book Award and PEN/Martha Albrand Award, among other honors. His other books include “Standard Operating Procedure,” an account of Iraq’s infamous Abu Ghraib prison under the American occupation, and “A Cold Case,” a novel about an unsolved double homicide.

In 2005, Gourevitch succeeded the late George Plimpton as editor in chief of The Paris Review, where he introduced more nonfiction pieces and a regular photography spread. He left that position in 2009 in order to concentrate more fully on his writing. His work has appeared in Granta, Harper’s and The New York Review of Books.

In addition to his public reading, Gourevitch will teach a master class for students in the Department of Writing. For more information, visit www.ithaca.edu/dvw or contact Catherine Taylor, associate professor of writing, at ctaylor@ithaca.edu.
