Department of Physics

With a physics degree from Ithaca College you're prepared to compete in the fields of science, math, engineering, computing, or technology. Our program is highly flexible: you'll start with a core of basic courses and then choose a concentration that matches your developing interests. Most of our recent alumni have continued their education at graduate school; others have earned teaching certification. Some have received positions at high-technology companies such as Intel, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin. And many take advantage of our 3-2 physics-engineering program.

Why start at Ithaca? Because here the main focus is on student learning. You'll receive individual attention from professors whose priority is to teach. There's also the chance to pursue subjects beyond science in one of the College's other schools. And our highly innovative, performance-based teaching laboratory introduces aspiring teachers to the latest physics education methods. Whatever your interests, our multifaceted programs can accommodate them.

You can graduate with a degree in physics or math-physics while specializing in a specific area, such as astronomy. Both options provide ample opportunities for hands-on research. Our students and faculty have analyzed data from NASA's Spitzer space telescope; collaborated on magnetic surveys of archaeological sites; studied the process of asteroid crater formation; investigated the properties of materials at low temperatures; and assisted with the acoustic monitoring of elephants in West Africa.
