Experiential Learning in H&S

Experiential Learning Survey Results

As part of its efforts to better understand the status of experiential learning in H&S, in April 2007 the Experiential Learning Committee conducted a survey of faculty course offerings to help clarify this important aspect of H&S identity and to extend the discussion about the role of experiential learning in H&S. The survey was available on-line for several weeks towards the end of the spring semester.

The goals of the survey were to:

  1. identify the scope of experiential learning opportunities currently available in H&S;
  2. gauge potential H&S faculty interest in a Pilot Project in 07-08;
  3. gather feedback on the working definitions of the four Experiential Learning models that the Committee identified; and
  4. create a clearinghouse for information about experiential learning in H&S.

The Committee reviewed the data during summer 2007, and drafted a report (available at the links below) analyzing the results.  The Report concludes that the survey met objectives 1-3.  Specifically, the results provide a snapshot of the variety of experiential learning activities that faculty currently provide for their students.  They also indicate that the Committee’s definitions of the experiential learning models identified in the working document  A Framework for Experiential Learning in H&S are generally valid.  Establishing a clearinghouse will be a longer-term goal.
