A Framework for Experiential Learning in H&S

This working document was developed by the Experiential Learning Committee in spring 2007, based on research, interviews, and discussion between August and March.  The document has three primary sections.

1) Criteria for a Quality Experience: a discussion of several criteria that practitioners have found to be essential components of quality experiential learning offerings

  • Disciplinary Skills are Applied and Practiced
  • Faculty Mentoring is Consistent
  • Learning is Purposeful and Measurable
  • Reflection is a Key Component
  • Student Responsibility Moves Beyond a Course Grade

2) Models of Experiential Learning: identification of four different models of experiential learning that are currently being offered by H&S Faculty

  • Cultural Immersion
  • Professional Practice
  • Research
  • Service Learning/Civic Engagement

3)  Development and Delivery Challenges: a description of obstacles and challenges that affect the offering of effective experiential learning opportunities
