Special Academic Programs in H&S

Internships in H&S

Internships undertaken through H&S allow students to discover how theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom functions within a real-world work environment. Working in collaboration with a site supervisor and a faculty member, students are able to integrate academic study with the practical experience they acquire in a work environment.

Internships are offered for credit through specific H&S departments and programs (consult the course catalog for details). Typically, H&S programs require students to have completed a substantial portion of a major or minor course of study before they are eligible to undertake an Internship; in this way, students are prepared to get the most out of these experiential learning opportunities.

All for-credit Internships require approval in advance. Students must submit a design statement and application form (Word version) for approval before the semester they are undertaken (forms are also available in the H&S Dean's office, Muller 201), or, if this is not possible, no later than the end of the second week of the semester in which the work will be carried out. Because the approval process requires input and signatures from the faculty sponsor, Chair of the faculty member’s department, the field supervisor at the work location, the student’s advisor, and the Assistant Dean, students are advised to begin the application process well in advance. In addition, students enrolled in degree programs in other Schools at IC must get the signature of their dean, prior to submitting the application to the Assistant Dean of H&S.  Late applications will not be accepted.

Students who plan to enroll in for-credit internships during the summer must also submit a design statement and application to the Assistant Dean in H&S, at least two weeks in advance of the summer deadline. The deadline for summer course enrollment is established by the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies (607-274-3143); please contact that office for details.

Note that students must be in good academic standing to receive approval to participate in an internship.  No more than 12 credits in any combination of internship projects can be counted toward the 120 credits required for graduation.
