An introduction to the basic ideas of chemistry, the nature and structure of chemical compounds, and the meaning of chemical symbols. An application of these ideas and understandings to the chemistry of the body, with specific discussion of food, drugs, cosmetics, and other health-related topics.

OBJECTIVES: To have students carry out organic reactions that have been introduced in Chemistry CHEM 11200 and to become acquainted with elementary organic laboratory techniques.
STUDENTS: Required of physical therapy majors; also taken by some Health Sciences and Human Performance students.
FORMAT AND STYLE: Six laboratory reports, 5 quizzes (given in the recitation periods), and a final exam.
GRADING: Based on laboratory performance, quizzes and final exam.

PREREQUISITE: CHEM 12100 or CHEM 12300; CHEM 22100 prior or concurrent.
OBJECTIVES: To introduce the student to basic chemical laboratory techniques, methods of chemical research, and modern analytical instruments. This course seeks to apply many of the concepts taught in Principles of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry 1.
STUDENTS: Required of all chemistry and biology majors; open to anyone else who is interested and qualified.
FORMAT AND STYLE: Lecture on Tuesday at 8:00 AM to discuss theoretical background of the upcoming experiment, demonstrate equipment and techniques, and discuss results of previous experiments. One four-hour laboratory per week.
REQUIREMENTS: Attendance, safety goggles, laboratory notebook, weekly quizzes on Tuesday morning, weekly laboratory reports, one formal written report.
GRADING: Quizzes, lab reports, formal report, lab performance, and final exam.
