PREREQUISITE: None. Open to students with no previous French or by placement exam.

OBJECTIVES: An introduction to French language and culture through a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.

FORMAT AND STYLE: Students attend class 3 hours per week (MWF) with the instructor and 1 hour per week (Thursday) for oral practice with a teaching assistant.

PREREQUISITES: FREN 10100 or equivalent based on French Placement score.

OBJECTIVES: A continuation of Elementary French I’s introduction to French language and culture through a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.

PREREQUISITES: FREN 10200 or FREN 10400 with a grade of C- or better, or assignment based on French placement score.

OBJECTIVES: To develop intermediate level proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing French. Special emphasis will be given to French culture.

STUDENTS: Anyone who wishes to learn French.
FORMAT AND STYLE: Classes meet three times a week and consist of grammar, discussion of reading selections, writing, and conversation. In-class tests. Classes are conducted in French.
REQUIREMENTS: (1) Textbook (w/audio CD and Quia password) Bravo, 6th edition, Thomson/Heinle, 2005), Muyskens et al. (2) Chapter tests; (3) Final exam; (4) Regular class attendance is imperative. Overcutting will lead to a substantial grade reduction or being dropped from the class.

OBJECTIVES: (1) Developing spoken and written communication skills at the third-year level, broadening the student’s cultural understanding.

STUDENTS: French majors, minors, and any interested students who qualify.
FORMAT AND STYLE: Classes conducted in French. Emphasis on everyday conversational French and the development of functional oral communication through conversation and discussion of assigned readings. Grammar structures will be reviewed. Writing practice.
REQUIREMENTS: Textbook: French for Oral and Written Review, 5th edition, Charles Carlut and Walter Meiden, Heinle & Heinle, ISBN: 0-03-075899-8. Autour de la littérature, 5th edition, Peter Schofer and Donald Rice, Heinle & Heinle, ISBN: 1-4130-058307. ATTENDANCE and PARTICIPATION required.
GRADING: Will be based upon class participation, compositions, quizzes, a mid-term, and a final exam.

OBJECTIVES: To read and analyze representative texts with a view to both improving critical thinking and understanding the development of thought from early modern to contemporary French literature.

FORMAT AND STYLE: Class conducted in French with discussions, essays and tests.
REQUIREMENTS: Regular participation, textbook.
GRADING: Based on discussions, essays and tests.

OBJECTIVES: Intensive practical phonetics, including phonetic transcription, for American speakers of French.


FREN 37700-01 TOPICS IN FRENCH LITERATURE AND CULTURE: FRANCOPHONE CIVILIZATION HU LA
3 CREDITS

PREREQUISITES: FREN 30100 or equivalent, with permission of the instructor.

OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to acquaint students with the culture, history, and traditions of French-speaking parts of the world (exs. North and West Africa, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Canada) through the study of texts, fiction and non-fiction, video, and multi-media resources.

STUDENTS: Any interested student who qualifies.
FORMAT AND STYLE: readings, viewing of videos, discussion. Short research assignments using multi-media. Attention to improvement of French language skills as well as mastery of course content. Class conducted in French.
REQUIREMENTS: Regular reading and writing assignments, tests, short papers, project.
GRADING: Based on preparation for and participation in class, tests, project, papers.
