Theater Arts (THPA)

Spring 2010

Majors are admitted through audition and faculty review. Since the requirements for the several degrees in Theatre Arts are extensive and specific, any student in the College who is interested in transferring to the major should consult with the department directly.
Courses for Non-Majors: Non-majors may enroll in introductory courses in acting, dance, Introduction to Theatre, and other areas if space is available. THPA 16000 Introduction to Theatre is especially recommended for non-majors.


THPA 10000-01 THEATRE PRODUCTION (CRN 41470) U NLA
1 CREDIT
May be repeated for a total of 8 credits.

PREREQUISITE: None

OBJECTIVES: To give students experience in the backstage, construction, and support activities of theatrical production.

STUDENTS: Open to any student on the Ithaca College campus who wishes to participate in set, costume, and property construction, stage lighting, sound, and scene painting.
FORMAT AND STYLE: Students are assigned to a crew for a theatre department production and are called as needed.
REQUIREMENTS: Interest in participation in theatre support activity; time in the afternoon, evening and on weekends to work on production crews. Must attend an informational meeting on Monday, January 28, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Hoerner Theatre, Dillingham.
GRADING: Reliability in meeting crew calls, cooperation, and responsibility in carrying out assigned work. Must usher for one performance during semester.


THPA 10200-01 STAGECRAFT (CRN 40008) NLA

PREREQUISITE: None/Co-requisite: must be taken concurrently with THPA 10000-01.

OBJECTIVES: This course is an introduction to all the facets of technical theatre and design. The focus of the course is the relationship between the technical elements of production and the actor. Coverage includes organization of staff and crews, procedures for building and mounting the scenic elements, and the effects of architecture on all aspects of theatrical performance.

STUDENTS: The course is for students primarily involved in aspects of theatre other than technical and for students from disciplines outside the theatre. No previous background in theatrical production is required.
FORMAT AND STYLE: 2 hours lecture per week to be taken concurrently with THPA 10000-01.
GRADING: Based on attendance, performance in class and labs, and achievement on quizzes and tests.

OBJECTIVES: To introduce the students to basic acting exercises and concepts involving use of the body, voice and imagination. To develop facility in applying this work to improvisations and performance of scripted material.

STUDENTS: All majors.
FORMAT AND STYLE: The class is taught as a structured workshop and involves theatre games and exercises, outside readings, discussions, improvisations, rehearsals (inside and outside of class) and performance of a monologue or scene or both. Some written work is also assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: The ensemble nature of the class requires full attendance at all class meetings and participation in all activities. Most of the work is done in class and cannot be made up.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURE: (A) Students must arrive punctually ready to work. (B) Comfortable, loose clothing should be worn - no skirts or hats. (C) There can be no eating, drinking, smoking or gum chewing in the classroom space. (D) Deadlines for written and performance work must be observed.
GRADING: Grading is based on attendance, participation, growth and quality of work and completion of written and performance assignments.


THPA 13200-02 ACTING 2 (CRN 41574) FA LA 3b

OBJECTIVES: A continuation of the practices learned in THPA 13100, Acting 1. To bring the character alive and create someone who is believable. To explore the work and then effectively translate the material from the text to the stage.
STUDENTS: All majors.

OBJECTIVES: Introduction to theory and practical aspects of theatre. Students will hear lectures representing various phases of theatre practice and theory. The lectures will be supplemented by occasional video and slide presentations, and illustrated by live scenes performed by student actors.

STUDENTS: All departments.
FORMAT AND STYLE: Two large lectures a week.
REQUIREMENTS: Texts: Edwin Wilson, The Theater Experience, Edwin Wilson and Alvin Goldfarb, The Living Theatre Anthology, and several plays to be assigned; all students required to see major departmental productions; quizzes on plays discussed; multiple choice, computer-graded mid-term and final exams.

OBJECTIVES: To continue ballet education. To nurture an ease of movement that stems from an understanding of mind and body connectedness in the quest for increased flexibility, support and balance. To further develop student's appreciation for the art of ballet as a means of self expression.

THPA 35200-01 DANCE FOR THE MUSICAL STAGE (CRN 41610) FA LA

PREREQUISITES: Beginning Jazz.
STUDENTS: All departments.

OBJECTIVES: This course will familiarize the student with techniques, forms, and styles of dance in musical theatre. It is a continuation of THPA 35100. Social dance styles of the 1920's through the early 1970's will be studied. An historical overview of the time periods, costumes, manners and their effects on social and theatrical dances of the era will be covered. Choreographic styles such as those of Agnes de Mille, Jerome Robbins, Jack Cole and Bob Fosse will also be a primary focus. This course will also cover the history of dance in musical theatre and musical theatre choreographers of the era through readings, lectures, class discussions, student oral reports and films.

GRADING: A-F
