Template for Sustainability Case Study Description

 

Please use this description template as a guide for producing a detailed description of how you incorporated sustainability concepts into your course or activity.  Not all of the following sections or questions within sections may apply to your particular situation, but please try to address each item in the order presented here.

 

1.  Course Number, Title, and Affiliation (department or program)

            For non-course based activities, please indicate affiliation

 

2.  Context for the Course/Sustainability Content

            Is this an introductory course?

            What is the class or group size?

            What level are the students – all first year? all seniors? a mixture of all levels?

            What type of background do you expect students to have?

            What have you already covered in this particular class that is relevant to the lesson?

 

3.  Module Objectives / Expected Learning Outcomes

Please indicate which of the sustainability learning objectives are relevant to this course or activity http://www.ithaca.edu/icpse/docs/LearningObjectives/learningobjectives/

            What other learning objectives are there for the sustainability content piece?

 

4.  Student Preparation

            Were students asked read particular articles?  If so, give full citations of these readings.

Were students required to prepare something before class, i.e. a response paper, answer questions, take a quiz, etc.? (Please supply the assignments)

Did the students make observations? Write reflective pieces?

 

5.  Materials

            Provide any materials that were used as part of the course/activity (worksheets, PowerPoint

            presentations, lists of web sites, videos, etc.)

Please list any invited speakers and their topics.

Please indicate destination and purpose of any field trips.

 

6.  Instructor Resources

            List important instructor resources (books, articles, websites, etc.).

 

7.  Time Frame

During what timeframe was the sustainability content covered or incorporated into your course?  Was there a single class period, a set of grouped class periods, or was the content covered in many separate class periods throughout the semester? How much time should be allotted for students to reach the expected outcomes? 

 

8.  Steps or Flow of an Activity (optional; complete if applicable)

For a self-contained sustainability module or single class lesson, please provide a description of the order in which you proceed through the lesson, including both what you as the instructor do and what the students do.

 

9.  Assessment

How did you assess whether your course modification met the objectives and if the students reached the expected learning outcomes?

Please include examples of assessment tools you used.

 

10.  Problems Encountered and How the Problems were Dealt with Successfully

It is rare for a new approach to not encounter problems of some sort.  Others are far more likely to use your innovations if they are forewarned about any potential problems they might face, especially if you have been able to solve these problems.

 

11.  Common Student Questions with Answers

            What questions came up from students and how did you respond?

 

12.  Course Evaluations

What kinds of student comments or feedback have you received from students about the sustainability content you added?

 

13.  Final Reflection

Do you have any final thoughts about the course module?  Can you provide advice for others who want to do a similar thing? Ideas for expansion or improvement?
