This 3-credit course is a coordinated offering between Ithaca College and local public schools. The primary purpose of the course is to introduce pre-service teachers to the public education system in an extended field experience. Each student completes 50 hours of fieldwork in a classroom setting. Students are not merely observing in their field placements; they are actively engaged in local elementary and middle school classrooms as they work with children individually or in small groups in order to help teachers accomplish their educational goals. Students connect theory with practice in weekly reflective journals and seminar sessions. They also design and carry out an individual action research project in which they seek systematically to improve a self-selected aspect of their own teaching practice.
