|Service Learning: Students participate in a hands-on assignment with a community organization using technology to help solve environmental problems.|
A central theme of environmental science is the effect of human societies on the environment, and how individual human and societal behavior can be modified to minimize the deleterious effects on the environment. In this course, we focus on the scientific principles fundamental to understanding human impact on the environment and how technological advances can maximize or minimize the deleterious effects on the environment. We tie together the political, social, and economic aspects of environmental studies with the biological and chemical principles. The course includes a hands-on service learning assignment to give students experience working with a community organization that is using technology to help solve environmental problems. One goal is for students to experience firsthand how knowledge learned in the classroom can be applied to solve real world issues. Additionally this assignment gives students the opportunity to give back to the community through volunteering your time and skills. This project is akin to a mini-internship- and is worth 20% of your total grade.
