|Undergraduate Research: Students conduct local environmental history research projects.|
This course focuses on the history of environmental ideas, values, and attitudes. Topics include capitalist, Romantic, and ecological thinking; the goals of conservation and preservation; recent rethinking of primitive experience; and today's dialogue between mainstream environmentalism and deep ecology, the latter including ecofeminism, sustainable development, and biodiversity. Students examine the profound impact each of the paradigms has had on human-environment relations in America. Students conduct local environmental history projects.
