|Professional Development Award in Occupational Therapy|
Aside from spending four years of my childhood in the Dominican Republic, I’ve spent most of my life in my birthplace: The Bronx, New York. In high school I felt the pressure of knowing what career path I would take, although I was unaware of the possibilities. I remember trying to choose between teaching and nursing but not being able to make up my mind. Luckily, after sharing my struggle with my sister-in-law she told me about occupational therapy. It was love at first sight, and Ithaca College became my dream school.
My college advisor discouraged me, saying I would never get into such a selective program (that might’ve had to do with my being the only POSSE scholarship finalist) but I wasn’t disheartened. It was the only private institution I applied to, and here I am today! While at Ithaca College I was able to do my Level I pediatric fieldwork at DeWitt Middle School, where I fell in love with the age group. I was able to serve as a stable and guiding figure in a child’s life and the feeling was unbeatable. I gained a child’s trust and saw the immense impact occupational therapy can have!
