|David A. Wolcott|
|Professional Excellence Award in Clinical Health Studies/Physical Therapy|
David grew up in the small town of Warsaw, New York and moved to Batavia, NY during his high school years. After being accepted to Ithaca College, he enrolled in the physical therapy program and decided on a minor in business. During his senior year, David was fortunate to take part in a research study with Dr. Barb Belyea and fellow classmates in which they looked at the effects of a neuromuscular training program on landing mechanics in varsity cheerleaders.
David was first introduced to physical therapy as a child because of his youngest brother, who was born with Down Syndrome and has received care from many healthcare professionals including physical therapists. He was able to observe physical therapists in his home as well as in a school setting. He had the opportunity to shadow some therapists at Mary Cariola Children’s Center in 2010. This experience confirmed that physical therapy was the right profession for him and fuels the passion for learning he has today. The experience also has David considering a career working with children with disabilities upon graduation and he hopes to help children like his brother through the profession of physical therapy.
