|Academic Excellence Award|
Growing up with a family member with a disability sparked my interest in working with the population. When I was introduced to therapeutic recreation, I liked that the field offered many different opportunities of working in dynamic settings with various populations, including individuals with disabilities.
I believe the benefits of recreation and leisure are an essential part of human life. I’m grateful that as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I will assist in providing individuals with these benefits. I plan to move south and work in a community or outpatient setting with individuals with disabilities.
My fieldwork at Ithaca Youth Bureau led to the most rewarding summer job I have ever experienced. I worked as an Inclusion Specialist at Cass Park Day Camp assisting children with disabilities to have a successful summer camp experience. My experience at Cass Park further solidified that I had chosen the correct field of study.
Academics have been a challenge for me. While attending Ithaca College I had countless struggles and I owe many thanks to my advisor Linda Heyne, professors, fieldwork supervisors, family, and friends for helping me through my four years at IC. I would not be here today without their help and encouragement.
