Ithaca College To Host Presentation By 'Body Project' Author

ITHACA, NY—Ithaca College will host expert and author Joan Jacobs Brumberg on Monday, Feb. 18, for two presentations in recognition of National Eating Disorders Awareness Month. Brumberg is the author of “The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls” and “Fasting Girls: A History of Anorexia Nervosa.” Both programs are free and open to the public.

“Eating Disorders: Culture, Theory, and Practice”

3–5 p.m., Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall

Brumberg will discuss the history of anorexia nervosa and how the disease has changed over time. Joining her for a follow-up panel presentation will be:

Cyndy Scheibe, associate professor of psychology and executive director of the Ithaca College Center for Research on the Effects of Television and Project Look Sharp

Cathy Saloff-Coste, registered dietitian and nutrition therapist

Cris E. Haltom, psychologist and community education/prevention liaison, Eating Disorders Recovery Center of Western New York

“From Corsets to Body Piercings: A History of American Girls and Their Bodies”

7–8:30 p.m., Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall

A presentation by Brumberg on how growing up in a female body has changed and why we have become so obsessed with “body projects” of all kinds.

Internationally known for her research and writing about the history of American girls, Brumberg is a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow and Professor Emerita at Cornell University, where she had a unique interdisciplinary appointment in history, human development and gender studies. She has been a guest on the “Today” show, the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and many other television and radio programs that

cover social issues concerning women and girls. She appeared in the Canadian Broadcasting Company documentary “The Famine Within,” a cultural exploration of the pursuit of thinness in North America, and the PBS NOVA film “Dying to Be Thin,” a scientific investigation of the causes and treatment of eating disorders. In 2005, “The Body Project” inspired a play of the same name at Horizons Theatre in Washington DC.
