The curriculum for a class cohort varies depending on the year one started in the PT program. The curriculum is also different for the Clinical Science/Physical Therapy (B.S./M.S) and Clinical Health Studies/Physical Therapy (B.S./D.P.T) programs.
For the B.S./D.P.T program, the first three years take place on the Ithaca campus and grounded in liberal arts to enhance intellectual flexibility and develop creative thinking skills. In addition to core coursework in the sciences, there is an expectation to explore other disciplines through a required minor (of the students choice) and the fulfillment of general education requirements. The Physical Therapy curriculum also affords the opportunity to study abroad.
The professional phase of the program begins following the junior year with courses in dissection-based anatomy, examination and evaluation, and treatment techniques which utilize lecture and laboratory learning components. Two years of the professional component will be based primarily in Ithaca. The final year is based in Rochester to take advantage of invaluable patient exposure in an urban environment.
The curriculum requires study during some summers: 10 weeks of coursework in Rochester after the third year; 8 weeks of clinical education following the fourth year; and 12 weeks of clinical education preceding September graduation in the sixth year (third professional year).
