HSHP Scholarship Application Information for 2009-10

Applications are now  being accepted by the Dean's Office, School of Health Sciences and Human Performance (320 Smiddy Hall) for scholarships available to currently enrolled HSHP major and minor students who are returning for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The deadline for students to HAND-DELIVER, HARD-COPY (NO EMAIL), 2009-2010 applications to the Dean's Office is 4:00 p.m, Friday, March 6, 2009. This is the last day before Spring Break----NO LATE Submissions will be accepted.

It is important for students to keep informed about deadlines for completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be aware of the many aid sources that exist. This wide range of sources includes Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Work Study, the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and Ithaca College grants and scholarships.

Physical Therapy students may also be eligible for the following:

  • The Higher Education Opportunity Act includes provisions that impact student loans for physical therapy education programs. The Department of Education will issue regulations that will provide physical therapists with the eligibility to apply and compete for student loan repayment up to $2,000 per year for up to 5 years. The legislation specifies that the physical therapist must practice in an identified area of need and with children, adolescents, or veterans.
  • The New York State Education Department offers the Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship Program to students who are members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the licensed profession.
  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers the Indian Health Scholarship program, the purpose of which is "…to obtain health professionals to meet the staffing need of the Indian Health Service in health manpower shortage areas." This program provides financial assistance for Native Americans in selected health care professions. Physical therapy is one of the "Priority Careers" supported by this program. A service obligation is required.
  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers Health Professional Scholarships in selected health care areas, including physical therapy. The purpose of this program is to assist in providing an adequate supply of health care professionals for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the nation. A two-year service obligation in a VA medical center is required.
  • AMBUCS "Scholarships for Therapists" program, for which physical therapy undergraduate and graduate students are eligible, is to enhance direct therapy services to citizens who are disabled and functionally handicapped by providing financial assistance for professional training. Physical therapy is one of six professional training areas for which these scholarships are available.

NYS Transfer Student Scholarship Program

NYSTAA is the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association, a consortium of 600 advisers and others involved in the transfer process at more than 100 colleges and universities within and outside the state and Sandy Kelley, Ithaca College Admissions,  currently serves as an officer in this association.
 
Scholarship eligibility criteria include:
1. Graduation from a New York State 2-year member college
2. Transferring to a NYS 4-year member institution (here is a list of member institutions, including IC): http://www2.canisius.edu/nystaa/institutions.html)   
3. Min GPA of 3.2
