Stephen Mosher quoted on ESPN.com
Why on Earth would anyone from New York choose to root for the Mets instead of the Yankees? That's the question Stephen Mosher, a professor in the Department of Sport Media and Management, attempted to answer in an ESPN article titled "Are fans giving the Mets a free pass?"
In the article, which was posted last week, Mosher explained the tribalism that goes into fandom and discussed possible sociological and psychological reasons why someone might choose to root for the franchise despite its lack of recent success.
"The first Mets fans were deliberately choosing to not to be Yankee fans," Mosher told ESPN. "They may not have been Brooklyn or Giants fans, when those teams left. They might not even have been baseball fans. ... It was a deliberate choice to be an anti-Yankee fan."
