Current Research

Dr. Gentner's research interests include athletes' quality of life and developing mental training strategies to enhance individual and team performance. Dr. Gentner is currently in the process of validating an instrument designed to measure athletes' quality of life. In addition, Dr. Gentner engages in qualitative research in an attempt to gain a better understanding of how athletes, coaches, and consultants experience and use mental training.

Classes

Dr. Gentner currently teaches three of the graduate courses in the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences. "Exercise and Rehabilitation Psychology" is primarily a lecture class designed to build a strong theory base in exercise psychology. Topics include exercise behavior and adherence, psychology of injuries, burnout and overtraining, and exercise addiction, among others. "Professional Practice Issues in Sport Psychology" allows students to explore the applications of mental training in their chosen careers (i.e., sport psychology consultant, coach, athletic trainer, educator, etc.). Specifically, students are asked to engage in critical thinking regarding ethical issues in sport psychology and current trends and developments in the field. Developing a curriculum vita, resume, professional portfolio, and business brochure are additional class projects. "Case Studies in Applied Sport Psychology" provides students with an opportunity to critically examine the art of mental training while they develop their own consulting style and philosophy through case study presentations and role play activities. Dr. Gentner is interested in using his courses to actively engage his students in the process of developing their sport psychology consulting skills through the application of theoretical knowledge.
