Current Research
Dr. Sforzo studies enhancing exercise performance in subjects across
the lifespan. He led an interdisciplinary team of researchers in an in-depth
study of the effects of exercise in older adults, and, is currently interested
in studying the impact of exercise on the cognitive function of children
and young adults. In a most recently published work, he along with colleagues, published
a paper describing the effects of massage on muscle soreness after resistance
exercise.(British Journal of Medicine). Other publications appear
in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning, Medicine & Science
in Sport and Exercise, Journal of Aging and Physical Activity, ACSMs
Health & Fitness Journal, and International Journal of Exercise,
Metabolism and Nutrition.
Dr. Sforzo's current work with graduate students includes examining alternative
forms of resistance exercise; culture differences in fitness; the order of
cardiovascular and resistance exercise in an exercise session; and the cognitive
impact of exercise.
Classes
Dr. Sforzo has taught graduate courses in Physiological Mechanisms of Exercise;
Graded Exercise Testing and Prescription; and Exercise for Disease Intervention
and Older Adults. He currently teaches Exercise for Disease Intervention during
the first block of the summer session and participates in the weekly graduate
seminar offered in each semester. Exercise for Disease Intervention and Older
Adults is a course that delves into the etiology, diagnosis, and treatments
for chronic lifestyle- derived disorders such as cardiac and pulmonary diseases,
diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc. The course also contains a substantial
section dealing with exercise programming (testing and prescription) for older
adults.
Dr. Sforzo also directs an ACSM workshop at Ithaca College each summer for
aspiring health and fitness instructors. The four-day workshop emphasizes both
theoretical information and applied skills. The week concludes with a day-long
exam that, if passed, grants certification by the American College of Sports
Medicine as a Health/Fitness Instructor to the student.
Dr. Sforzo also teaches Exercise Physiology in the undergraduate curriculum.
