Classes
Dr. Shelley teaches five of the graduate courses in the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences. "Psychological Perspectives of Sport" is primarily a lecture class to build a strong theory base to sport psychology. Topics include motivation, anxiety and arousal, attention and concentration, imagery and visualization, group dynamics and cohesion, career termination, and injury rehabilitation, among others."Psychological Applications to Sport Performance" allows a more practical, "hands-on" approach to learning. Students work with peers to create their own mental training program that incorporates all the topics of the previous class."Counseling Student-Athletes" involves student role playing to learn aspects of sport counseling and to develop performance enhancement brief counseling skills. Dr. Shelley is interested in making classes very applied and useful in terms of teaching the student practical sport psychology consulting skills. He also teaches the "Effective Team Building" and "Motivation for Superior Performance" courses in the summer.
