The Occasional Atypical Job

Our students have found themselves well prepared for jobs even outside the exercise and sports sciences arena. Consider, for instance, the student who took a hiatus of three years to get his law degree. He eventually returned and finish his M.S. in Exercise Physiology. He is now a practicing trial attorney specializing in medical malpractice; using his education in cardiopulmonary physiology and rehabilitation to better understand the medical issues he deals with on a regular basis.

We know that students desire to follow their passions into meaningful and exciting careers. Of course we cannot guarantee that each student will graduate with such a job in hand, but our track record of students moving into high-level positions speaks for itself. Consider these positions in the last couple of years:

M.S. in Exercise Physiology

  • Human performance research for the Army
  • Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation at a major Boston hospital
  • Cardiopulmonary research at a major Boston hospital
  • Human performance research at a major Eastern university
  • Collegiate athletic trainer (with NATA certification)
  • Athlete strength & conditioning specialist with a prominent athletic conditioning center

M.S. in Sport Psychology

  • Collegiate coaches in football, crew, swim/dive, basketball, soccer, and more
  • Collegiate athletic trainer (with NATA certification)
  • Sport psychology consultant with an internationally reknowned athletic performance enhancement group
  • Sport psychology / wellness consultant with a major medical fitness/wellness center
  • Research coordinator at a world renowned medical center
  • Collegiate athletic director
  • High school physical educator and coach
  • Sport psychology consultant and coach with a major mid-western sports training complex

Other graduates have gone on to Ph.D. work in exercise physiology, exercise science, clinical psychology, sport psychology, and other disciplines at major universities. Some students have used their graduate education to enhance their own athletic careers. In fact, we typically have at least one student each year vying for membership on a national, international, or professional level team.

How do students find themselves with such opportunities? The answer is simple:

  • The educational preparation is intense yet personal
  • The practical experiences, including clinical coursework, research opportunities, coaching assistantships, and an extensive network of internship opportunities, ensure that our students know not only what to do, but how to do it
  • The well-deserved reputation of our program, maintained by the outstanding work of our former students and the ongoing scholarly activities of our faculty, puts our students in a favorable position when they venture off campus.
