Assistantship with Curriculum and Methods in Secondary School Physical Education
The Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education awards graduate assistantships each year to qualified students to help make Ithaca College and affordable education option. Assistantship responsibilities vary, and the award typically includes a partial waiver of tuition and a salary.
Recent graduate assistants have helped the department by filling various roles:
Teaching opportunities are available in many different courses. Students assist in the physical education methods courses, health methods courses, and motor development course, where they work with the course instructor to help preservice teachers develop their teaching skills. Additionally, graduate assistants help supervise students during their field-based experiences in the public schools and provide them with feedback to improve their teaching skills.
Research assistantships allow students to work collaboratively with faculty on projects of mutual interest. Their involvement may range from literature research to data collection and analysis to writing. Depending on the project, faculty and the graduate assistant may present their work at a conference and/or submit a paper to a journal.
Coaching assistantships provide students with the opportunity to assist the head coach in many aspects of the sport, ranging from practices to games. These assistantships give students the opportunity to develop their coaching skills and be part of a highly competitive Division III athletic program.
Other assistantships vary widely. For example, students work in the community setting with individuals with special needs or assist in teaching at an alternative school.
