Bios
Professor Peyi Soyinka-Airewele, has taught International
and Comparative Politics with an emphasis on African politics and
socio-political transitions for several years, first at Colgate University
and now at Ithaca College, New York. A fellow of the Global Security
and Cooperation (GSC) program of the Social Science Research Council,
and the Director of the Alliance for Community Transformation (Africa),
Dr Soyinka-Airewele has integrated the work of the scholar-practitioner
for over a decade in her scholarship and active engagement in the
social, political and economic discourse and struggles in the continent.
Her research on the politics of memory in African political transitions
has received support from many quarters, including a GSC fellowship,
an invitation to join the team of scholars involved in preparing the
final 8 volume report of the Nigerian Human Rights Violations Investigation
Commission, and most recently, Fellowship of the Oxford Round Table
(Women’s Leadership), Oxford, England. Dr Soyinka-Airewele is
the recipient of the 2004 President’s Award for distinguished
Service of the Association of Third World Studies (ATWS). Her writings
have been published in several journals (African and Asian Studies,
Issue, Journal of Third World Studies etc) and she has just concluded
work on a book, which has received critical acclaim from preliminary
reviewers “Invoking the Past, Conjuring the Nation: Memory,
Communal Citizenship and Cathartic Violence”.
Kosala Kumara, currently a MS student in Communications
and Design, hails from Colombo, Sri Lanka. As a part of the IFF team
she assisted in the conceptual design of the proposed media-center
at OAU. She also conducted a feasibility study on equipment for the
center and compiled the film catalog. Her expected graduation date
is December 2005.
Sara Bebeau, one of the original IFF team members,
assisted with the development and design of the festival schedule
and website. She will also be traveling to Abuja, Nigeria to work
on site with conference organizers. She is a Cinema and Photography
Major with a concentration in Still Photography, and a French Minor.
Sara is a native of Albertville, MN and she is currently a senior,
graduating in May 2006
Joseph Gaskins Jr. is a Politics major from Freeport,
Grand Bahama, Bahamas. During the summer of 2005, he assisted with
the design of a comprehensive proposal and investigated possible institutional
sources of support. He is the organizing assistant for Public Relations
and will be working on site in Abuja, Nigeria. Joseph is a junior,
but is on path for an early graduation in December 2006.
Serkan Ozturkcan is an Ithaca College graduate student
in Communications and Design. He is from Istanbul, Turkey and was
responsible for organizing the media deliverables, working closely
with other volunteers, Jihae Kessler, Sujin Kim and Vandana Goel.
