Frequently Asked Questions

Does calculus count for the quantitative literacy requirement?

Calculus is a great math course and several majors on campus require students to complete a calculus course. Calculus credits also count toward required liberal arts hours and hours required for graduation, but do not address quantitative literacy, so calculus is not among the courses designated for fulfilling ICC's quantitative literacy requirement.

Quantitative literacy (QL) focuses on learning to use quantitative or numeric information effectively and appropriately to build support for a claim and being able to critically evaluate how others use quantitative or numeric information in support of their claims. Courses that achieve these outcomes include some courses in economics, research methods, statistics, and math. The official lists of QL designated courses appear on the ICC webpage (www.ithaca.edu/icc) and in the Ithaca College undergraduate catalog.
