Affiliates and Fellows
GUIDELINES FOR GERONTOLOGY INSTITUTE FACULTY
AFFILIATE AND FELLOW DESIGNATIONS
The Gerontology Institute recognizes the important contributions faculty in other departments make to our curricular, research, service, and community education activities. Two designations have been developed to recognize these faculty persons. They are Gerontology Institute Affiliates and Gerontology Institute Fellows. Designations are for five years and Affiliates who become Fellows start a new “clock” as Fellows.
Gerontology Affiliates:
Gerontology Affiliates must be involved in a minimum of two of the following at Ithaca College for a minimum of one year:
• teaching courses which include segments of aging issues;
• attending Institute workshops, lectures, and conferences to enhance
their knowledge
of aging issues;
• service on Gerontology Institute committees;
• presentations for Longview residents; or,
• community service activities related to aging/older adults.
Gerontology Fellows:
Gerontology Fellows must be regularly involved in a minimum of three of the following activities at Ithaca College for a minimum of five years:
• research on aging-specific topics;
• teaching courses on aging in their disciplines (such as Sociology
of Aging, Hearing Loss and the Older Adult, etc.);
• giving presentations at conferences on aging topics;
• publishing articles, books, or reports on aging topics;
• giving workshops or presentations for the Institute;
• community service activities related to aging/older adults, including
service on boards and/or advisory committees, presentations
on aging to community groups, etc.;
• service on Gerontology Institute committees; or,
• service to professional organizations in ways that focus on gerontology.
Nomination:
Faculty can be self-nominated or be nominated by a current member of the
Gerontology Institute faculty, the Director of the Gerontology Institute,
a current Gerontology Affiliate or Fellow, or an academic administrator.
Nominees are asked to provide a letter/memo/
e-mail describing their gerontological activities or a vita that highlights
the same. Decisions on nominations are made by the Gerontology Institute
faculty. Nominees are encouraged to apply as early in the academic year
as possible and must apply by March 1 each year.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of Affiliates and Fellows include:
• staying active in areas listed under the criteria;
• informing colleagues and students of Institute programs as appropriate;
and,
• acknowledging support of Institute as appropriate.
Rights and Privileges:
The rights and privileges of Affiliates and Fellows include:
• notice of Institute opportunities;
• listing in the College catalog;
• inclusion of designation on vita;
• invitations to participate in Institute events; and,
• inclusion of activities in Institute newsletter and web site.
Financial Support for Fellows:
In recognition of and to support their contributions to the Gerontology Institute, Faculty Fellows will be awarded a $200 “grant” for the first three years of each five year “term.” This money must be used for gerontology-related teaching, scholarship, or service. Some examples are support for travel, purchase of books, software, equipment, or support for student research assistants.
The money cannot be used as income for the Fellow, and it cannot be rolled over from year to year, so “use it or lose it” applies. In consideration of the paperwork involved, Fellows can only invoice the Institute once a year for expenditures. As an added convenience, we can make arrangements for the money to be spent at the College bookstore.
Faculty Fellow grant is contingent on the continued availability of funds each year and cannot be guaranteed.
