Education
I received my B.A. in Sociology from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and my M.A. in Sociology from Bowling Green State University, also in Ohio. In 1977 I received a Ph.D. in Sociology from Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to Ithaca I was Professor of Sociology and Director of the Health Care Administration program and Coordinator of the gerontology concentration at the State University of New York - College at Fredonia.
My sixth book, "Service Delivery to Rural Older Adults," co-edited with R. Turner Goins, will be published by Springer Publications in 2006. My fifth book, "Residential Choices and Experiences of Older Adults: The Pathways to Life Quality Study," with Elaine Wethington of Cornell University, was published in 2003. In addition, I have written over 50 book chapters and articles and published in a wide range of academic journals. My duties as Director of the Gerontology Institute do not leave me much time to teach classes, but in the past I've taught Social Demography, Urban, Environmental, Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Computer in Social Science Research, Medical Sociology, Sociology of Aging, Introduction to Gerontology, Aging in Rural America, and Aging Policies and Programs.
I am past-president of the State Society on Aging of New York, a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, and a charter Fellow of the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education.
Current community service involves serving on the boards of the Community Foundation of Tompkins County and Lifelong.
