Welcome Back IC Faculty Fall 2007

MEMO

Welcome Back!! I trust your summer was enjoyable and productive. The purpose of this memo is to highlight our programs and opportunities that may be of interest to you.

  • CONFERENCE: We are excited to announce that our annual conference will be a Rural Aging Summit scheduled for September 20 & 21. This Summit is designed as a working conference to assist in raising awareness of the challenges and opportunities presented by the growing elder population in rural areas. The Summit will develop a comprehensive report of policy recommendations to address these concerns at the state and local level. For more information, please go to http://www.ithaca.edu/agingconference.
  • WORKSHOPS: There will be three workshops on a variety of topics presented this semester. All workshops are on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-4:00 p.m. in the Longview Auditorium. Faculty, students, and staff are welcome to attend at no cost but on a first come – first served basis. We ask that you register by contacting the Office of Continuing Education at 4-3143. Information is also available at http://www.ithaca.edu/agingworkshop.
  • DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES: Gene Cohen will be our distinguished speaker on October 3. He is the first Director of the Center on Aging, Health & Humanities (established 1994) at George Washington University where he also holds the positions of Professor of Health Care Sciences and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He will visit classes and present a talk at 7:00 p.m. in the Nabenhauer Room, Whalen Center. The title of his talk is “The Mature Mind and the Aging Brain: Positive Changes and Creativity in the Second Half of Life.”
  • SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE: We are pleased to announce that Stephen Austad, Professor, Department of Cellular and Structural Biology at the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, will be the ICGI Visiting Scholar next semester. He will be on campus March 19-21, 2008 and an itinerary will be made available at the appropriate time.
  • LINDEN CENTER GRANTS: The Linden Center for Creativity and Aging, housed and administered through the Gerontology Institute, has funding available for full-time faculty and/or staff in the areas of curriculum development, research/scholarship performance, and community partnerships or programs. More information on these projects can be found on our website.
  • SUPPORT FOR SPEAKERS: The Institute is eager to partner with departments and programs across campus to co-sponsor speakers who address aging issues. Contact Pamela Mayberry, Associate Director, at 4-1607, for more information.

Application forms are available at the Institute. All registration forms must be returned to Penny at the Gerontology Institute by September 25, 2007. Note that this conference occurs at the same time as the College fall break.
