Our society is charging forward, and leaving the perceptions of the past in the dust. As we evolve as a collective, the integrity and welfare of our day to day lives relies on a commitment within ourselves to think ahead of visible societal progression, to predict and understand changes before they occur because doing so will allow us to consciously build a stronger tomorrow. We need this journal help us explore and critique where we've come from, the present times and what the future holds.
As George Orwell wrote, Rage Against the Machine echoed, and we perpetuate: "Those who control the past, control the future." We begin this look forward with a look back, to the evolution of racism in early Virginia. The author describes a less know period of time where Blacks in 1600s were treated as respected citizens of the community. She then takes us through a series of events that brought about the discrimination and eventual sub-par treatment of Blacks.
The journal continues with two fascinating studies concerning modern minority ownership and consumption. The article dealing with modern minorities portrays how little control minorities have in the world of business. Though the government seems to show interest in giving opportunities for minority ownership, there is little to prove their commitment. The article dealing with minority consumption gives evidence to the marketing schemes used to exploit the minority population. The author does well to present evidence of this exploitation in various ways.
So please read these articles knowing that the future is in our hands. We must discuss the fine work presented by our colleagues and use it as we mold the society in which we will live. This journal will always strive to showcase student work that asks structural questions about basic ideas and holds the very fabric of our society underneath an intellectual microscope-we will strive to pose those questions which must be answered as we lay the foundation for tomorrow's society.
Thank you, and enjoy.
