The appointment of Imre Tamas as a Charles A. Dana professor was announced by President Whalen during Commencement ceremonies May 19. Tamas, a faculty member in the biology department since 1969, was recognized for his talent as a teacher and as a research mentor. He has earned international recognition for his contributions to the scholarship of plant growth and development. "[Professor] Tamas is the recipient of prestigious scientific awards and numerous research grants, all of which attest to the respect that his colleagues here and in distant places have for him and for his work," Whalen said. "He is a gifted scientist whose influence on the lives and careers of his students will be long-lasting, and who has contributed immeasurably to the stature and notoriety of scientific studies at Ithaca College."
Also announced at commencement was the appointment of six faculty members as Dana teaching or research fellows for 1996-97. Named teaching fellows were Claire Gleitman, assistant professor of English; Hilary Greenberger '89, assistant professor of physical therapy; and Wenmouth Williams, professor of television-radio. Research fellows are Mark Hill, assistant professor of performance studies; Eileen Kelly, associate professor of management; and Nancy Rader, associate professor of psychology. The Dana fellowship program was established under a grant from the Charles A. Dana Foundation. It honors outstanding faculty members for their contributions to education programs through excellence in teaching and research.
In addition, 10 retiring Ithaca College faculty members were recognized at Commencement for their years of service to the College. They are
Anthony Bascelli, associate professor of modern languages and literatures
Mildred Brammer, professor of biology
Harvey Fireside, Dana professor of politics
Francoise Gebhart, associate professor of modern languages and literatures
Gail Hogan, associate professor of marketing
Doris Kostrinsky, coach, associate professor, intercollegiate athletics
James Markowitz, associate professor of management
Harriett Marranca, assistant professor of exercise and sport sciences
Constantine Perialas, associate professor of speech communication
James Treble, associate professor of television-radio
Also honored was retired professor of mathematics Marcia Ascher, who was awarded the status of professor emeritus. Professor Ascher taught at Ithaca College for more than 30 years.
