Brodhead Is Named Assistant Provost

Garry L. Brodhead, a 26-year faculty member and longtime department chair in Ithaca College's School of Music, has been named to a two-year term as assistant provost and dean of graduate studies.

The appointment is the latest in an office restructuring by former associate provost Mary Lee Seibert, who was named acting provost with last month's departure of Thomas C. Longin to pursue other professional opportunities. In late August, Tanya Saunders, the College's former director of international programs, was named assistant provost for special programs.

"I'm pleased that Garry has agreed to serve the College in this capacity," Seibert said. "He is a most respected faculty member who has contributed broadly to the College through service on many important committees and governance groups. He is a 20-year department chair and therefore will bring valuable experience to the position. I'm very much looking forward to working with him."

Among his duties as assistant provost Brodhead will staff the College's curriculum and policy subcommittees, work with assistant deans and faculty to develop and implement community college articulations, work directly with faculty development, supervise the revision of the undergraduate catalog, serve as the liaison to Faculty Council, and represent the provost's office on various groups and committees across campus. Brodhead's responsibilities as dean of graduate studies will include the review and approval of all applications for admission, review and approval of assistantships, College budget committee membership, budget preparation and management for the Division of Graduate Studies, chairing the All-College Committee, and evaluating and approving all graduate theses.

A professor of music theory, Brodhead joined the School of Music faculty in 1970. He has chaired the Department of Music Theory, History, and Composition since 1976. Brodhead's presentations and papers have been numerous, and he's currently working on a textbook, Sightsinging: Patterns and Strategies. He has been the recipient of five research grants over the course of his career and has affiliations with five professional organizations. Brodhead's College service and committee work have also been extensive.

"I've gotten to know the institution in many ways," Brodhead said. "This will be an opportunity to see Ithaca College from another perspective."

Brodhead's appointment is to take effect immediately.
