Jack Rossen, anthroplogy, presented two papers during the holiday break. The first, given at a special conference on Monte Verde in Lexington, Kentucky, was entitled "An Overview of the Archaeobotany and Ethnobotany of Monte Verde, Chile." The paper deals with plant remains from a 13,000-year-old settlement in southern Chile. The second paper, "Beans for Breakfast: The Civil War Archaeobotany of Camp Nelson, Kentucky," was given at the Society for Historical Archeology meetings in Corpus Christi, Texas. The paper documents plants found at one of the largest Civil War quartermaster depots, which was also the primary recruitment and training center for African American troops. Rossen also recently published two articles, "Ancient Cultigens or Modern Intrusions?: Evaluating Plant Remains in an Andean Case Study" in the Journal of Archeological Science and "The Nanchoc Tradition: The Beginnings of Andean Civilization" in American Scientist. The articles discuss the beginnings of complex society and plant domestication in northern Peru about 5,000-6,000 B.C.
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has awarded the Ithacan gold medalist certificates for both the fall 1995 and spring 1996 semesters in its in-depth annual critique of college student newspapers.
Each year, CSPA rates member publications against the standards of excellence set forth by the organization on a 1,000-point value system. Publications receive recognition either as a Gold Medalist (924-1,000 points), Silver Medalist (850-950 points), or Bronze Medalist (849 points and below). Founded in 1925, the CSPA is the nation's oldest continuous student journalism association. Also honored recently was Kelly Burdick '99, one of six winners of the On-Site Photo Competition sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and the College Media Advisers at the 1996 National College Media Convention in Orlando, Florida. Twenty participants were selected from 68 applicants; each was provided with two rolls of film, from which two shots could be submitted. The theme of this year's shoot-out was "Shopping at Disney Village." Burdick is a print journalism major.
