Longtime friend of Ithaca College and honorary trustee James W. Tucker died Sunday, March 23, in Lexington, Kentucky. He was 66.
Tucker joined the Ithaca College Board of Trustees in 1993, and was named an honorary member upon his retirement in the fall of 1995. Tucker served on the Executive and Resource Planning Committees and was chair of the Compensation and Benefits Committee and the combined Investment and Finance/Compensation and Benefits Committee.
"Jim Tucker was a loyal and effective trustee and friend, and most of all, a gracious, intelligent, and hard-working man who held Ithaca College in the highest regard," said Ithaca College president James J. Whalen. "Long before he joined the board Jim took an active interest in and was extremely helpful to the College. We will definitely miss him."
Tucker had been president of J. W. Tucker Associates, Inc. Previously, he was general manager and chief executive officer of the Quality Systems Division of Inchcape Testing Services, an international testing organization with operations in North America, Europe, and the Far East. Tucker had also been chairman, CEO, and director of ETL Testing Laboratories, Inc., of Cortland. Under his direction, ETL became a nationally recognized testing and certification laboratory. Before moving to ETL, Tucker was a 17-year employee of NCR, where for 5 years he was general manager of the company's Ithaca division.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, and their family.
