The 1996-97 Ithaca College theater season continues on Thursday, April 3, with a presentation of Romulus Linney's compelling drama, Heathen Valley. The play will be staged in Clark Theatre, Dillingham Center for the Performing Arts, April 3-5 and April 8-12. Performances are at 8:00 p.m. each evening, with an additional matinee scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on the 12th.
Directed by Arno Selco, Heathen Valley takes place in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina in the 1840s. Nestled in "the valley that forgot God," the play focuses on the turbulent interaction between the primitive mountain people and the Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina and his two acolytes. Their mission to convert the natives and the conflicts that develop as a result, provide for the intensity of this drama.
Based on Linney's novel of the same name, Heathen Valley was first produced by the Philadelphia Festival Theater for New Plays on May 7, 1987. In 1990 the play won four awards at the sixth annual Helen Hayes Awards Ceremony, including best play, best supporting actress, best costumes, and best sound.
The cast of Heathen Valley includes Brian Maillard '99 as Billy, Benjamin P. Wilson '99 as Starns, David Agranov '97 as Bishop, Gavin Hoffman '99 as Harlan, Stacie Lewis '97 as Cora, and Michell Sylvester '97 as Juba.
The design team for Heathen Valley includes scenic designer Alison Riley '98, lighting designer Breck Armstrong '97, costume designer Andrew Hasegawa '97, and sound designer David Chessman '97. Technical director for the production is Jospeh Petrosino '98, and Corey Whitesell '99 is the stage manager.
