Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band to Perform

The Ithaca College School of Music Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band will perform with special guest artists Pangaia on Thursday, April 17, at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall Auditorium.

Free and open to the public, the program will include Reflections by George Tanchev, graduate assistant to percussion ensemble director Gordon Stout. The piece, written in 1994 and commissioned by the Bulgarian Polyrhythmia percussion ensemble, won first prize and the special prize of the Union of Bulgarian Composers in 1995. All three movements are influenced by Bulgarian folk music and rhythms.

A steel band formed in 1995 by former Ithaca College faculty member Bill Youhass, Pangaia provides an opportunity for players and listeners to enjoy the unique sound of traditional music from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as new compositions, played on the steel "pan."

Youhass taught percussion at the College from 1971 to 1979.
