Ithaca College associate professor of psychology Carla Golden has been named a 1996-97 recipient of the Independent College Fund of New York Teaching Excellence Award, sponsored by the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. Golden is one of 11 faculty members statewide being recognized for resourcefulness and leadership as an independent college educator.
The criteria for the Teaching Excellence Award take into account a nominee's subject mastery, presentation, interaction with students, and dedication to teaching. In her statement of candidacy for the award, Golden noted that her primary objective in teaching is to stimulate and intellectually challenge students. "I wish for them to leave my classes not only having learned some of the classic and more recent findings in the discipline of psychology," she wrote, "but also having thought about who they are, how they choose to live , and how they can apply their knowledge in everyday life."
Golden has written and presented extensively on feminist psychoanalytic theories. She joined the psychology faculty in 1983 after teaching for six years at Smith College. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and master's and doctoral degrees from Syracuse University.
