Trustees Reelect Members, Approve Resolutions

At its recent meeting the Ithaca College Board of Trustees reelected Dr. Robert W. Baker Sr. and Lawrence Alleva '71 to five-year terms as board members, and chairman Herman E. Muller Jr. '51, vice chairman David W. Sass '57, and secretary Nancy Pringle to one-year terms as board officers.

An orthodontist, Baker has been in private practice in Ithaca and central New York for over 40 years. He joined the board of trustees in 1982 and currently serves as chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He has been both senior clinician and professor at Eastman Dental Center of the University of Rochester. Baker has been recognized with the Honors Recipient of Research Award from the American Association of Orthodontists, Faculty Teaching Excellence Award from Eastman, and Distinguished Alumni Award of Merit from Penn, among other honors.

Alleva has been with Price Waterhouse since graduating magna cum laude with an accounting degree from Ithaca College in 1971. He is currently the high technology group regional managing partner, based in Falls Church, Virginia. He previously served as managing partner of the firm's Syracuse office from 1987 to 1991, and as group managing partner for the Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo offices from 1991 to 1995. First elected to the board of trustees in 1987, he currently chairs its Executive Committee.

A member of the board since 1966, Muller was first elected chairman in 1993. He is a retired certified public accountant formerly associated with the accounting firm of Pannell Kerr Forster of New York City. Sass, a partner in the New York City law firm of McLaughlin & Stern, Alkalay, Handler, Robbins and Herman, joined the board in 1980. Pringle was named College attorney in 1994 and serves as the institution's chief legal officer.

The board also approved a resolution in memory of longtime friend and honorary trustee James W. Tucker, who had served on the board from 1993 to 1995. Trustees cited his professional accomplishments as a world leader in the testing and inspection industry, noting Tucker was "a local man working on a global stage, and we will surely miss the unique perspectives and sharp insights he brought both to the board and to the College."

A resolution of appreciation was approved by the board for retiring athletic director Robert C. Deming. For his 17 years of leadership-during which 11 Ithaca athletic teams won NCAA championships and more than 600 student-athletes earned all-American honors-trustees thanked Deming for his dedication and his "commitment to constructing a program that provided each participant with an 'opportunity for success.'"
