The Office of Personnel Services, the Counseling Center, and the Staff
Council Training Committee are teaming up to sponsor a pair of free workshops
for Ithaca College employees. Both programs will be held from noon to 1:00
p.m. in the south meeting room, Egbert Hall. Those attending are encouraged
to bring their lunches; beverages and snacks will be provided.
On Wednesday, December 3, "Talkin' 'Bout My Generation" will
focus on the issue of generational differences --- from the Baby Boomers
to Generation X --- and how they can affect the workplace. "Sometimes
there are misunderstandings between the fiftysomethings and the twentysomethings,"
says Margaret Dennis, associate director of personnel services. "Older
employees see the younger ones asking more questions, and perhaps perceive
them as making waves in the workplace. On the other hand, younger workers
may see older employees as too set in their ways and not open to new ideas.
That can create an uncomfortable working environment."
Eric Mendelson of the Counseling Center says the format of the workshop
will allow for participants to help develop their own solutions to problems.
"Margaret and I will talk a little about generational issues, but
the rest is going to be an open discussion. This is a format I've found
to be useful because people have a lot of observations and a lot to say.
We don't have any great or pat answers, but yet we can learn a lot from
one another."
On Tuesday, December 9, a timely workshop on holiday
stress reduction will give employees strategies for coping with what can
be an especially hectic time of year. "People are needing to keep
up with their demanding work schedules, but at the same time many are having
to worry about shopping and doing things with their families," says
Dennis. "We're going to discuss some simple and fun techniques to
help reduce some of the stress."
