David Dresser, assistant dean, School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, was recently inducted into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame. A 1960 Cornell graduate, Dresser was a three time lacrosse all-American for the Big Red, earning first-team laurels in his senior year. Dresser scored 50 goals and had 14 assists over his three-year career.


Harry McCue, art, recently exhibited artwork in the Mesa Arts Center's juried show entitled "Creature Feature." The exhibit was on display from December 2 through January 3 at the Mesa Arts Center, Mesa, Arizona.


Heinz Koch and Judith Koch, chemistry, have had a research paper published in the October 22 issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. The paper deals with the use of kinetic isotope effects in mechanism studies of elimination reactions. Gerrit Lodder is the third senior author, and the research is a result of the Ithaca College and Leiden University summer research exchange program. Ten Ithaca College students and graduates, Dave Bogdan '85, Carrie Carlson '93, Amy Dean '91, Patrick Han '98, Lisa James '91, Melissa Sardina '95, Rachael Sawyer '95, Barbara Scott '90, Charles Testa '95, and Steven Wickham '90, are coauthors, along with four Leiden students.

Heinz Koch had another paper published with Han Zuilhof, Wageningen Agricultural University, and Gerrit Lodder in an October issue of the Journal of Organic Chemistry dealing with molecular orbital calculations. Jason Nichols '00 will continue to work on the project this summer with Zuilhof.


Several Ithaca College students were recognized during the recent Northeast Association of College and University Residence Halls regional conference here. More than 250 delegates attended the session, during which Stacey Landis '98 and Taralyn Frasqueri-Molino '99 were cited for programs they presented during the conference. Four other students, Pam Shulman '00, Matthew Schultz '00, Yanira Clemente '99, and Dominic Cottone '99, were honored for outstanding leadership service, as was residence director Mathew Chetnik.


Ithaca College was a winner at the National Association of College Broadcasters 10th Annual Conference held on November 16, 1997, in Providence, Rhode Island. The 1997 National Student TV Programming Award in the category of A&E/The History Channel Documentary was awarded to Carrie Czarnecki '00, Carter Evans '98, and Joelle Kanuck '97. They were students in the spring '97 television journalism workshop class taught by assistant professor Mead Loop '88, and the winning documentary was entitled Poverty in Ithaca. The College had a total of five finalists in varied categories of the competition.

The documentary also won an award in the student video competition at the National Broadcasting Society's regional conference. At the same conference, the September 18, 1997, segment of Newswatch 54 was awarded Best Newscast. Newscast participants were Gary LaPlante '97, news director; Scott Kachmarik '97, producer; Mason Diedrich '98, director; Jon Byman '00, anchor; Cara Wefers '99, anchor; Adam Ellick '99, reporter; and Jen Dorning '98, reporter.


Introducción a la literatura Hispano-Americana: de la conquista al siglo XX, a compilation of Spanish-language masterpieces of Latin American literature, has been published by Gladys M. Varona-Lacey, modern languages and literatures. The book's three sections present a total of 99 selections, including short stories, plays, poetry, essays, diaries, letters, and chapters from novels, all in their original form. Varona-Lacey also recently coauthored with department colleague Julio López-Arias the Spanish review book, Test Yourself: Spanish Grammar.
