New Affirmative Action Officer Named

Michael A. Powell, special assistant to the president for affirmative action at Tufts University, has been named Ithaca College’s new affirmative action officer/assistant College counsel.

Powell joined the College staff on Wednesday, February 11. He succeeds Francine Montemurro, who took a similar post at the State University of New York at Binghamton last August.

Powell comes to Ithaca after three years in the office of the president at Tufts. While there, he was the senior administrative officer responsible for institutional compliance with federal, state, and local anti-discrimination laws and statutes. He held similar positions at the College of William and Mary, the University of Tulsa, and the University of Maryland-College Park. Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations/economics from Maryland, and a juris doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore.

At Ithaca, Powell will implement and monitor equal opportunity and affirmative action policies and programs across all areas of the College, serving as the liaison with civil rights compliance agencies, investigating discrimination and sexual harassment complaints, and conducting education and training programs for faculty, staff, and students related to sexual harassment and equity issues. Powell will also assist vice president and College counsel Nancy Pringle in handling a wide range of legal issues.
