World Premiere "Netcast" |

It is noteworthy enough that the world premiere performance of David Maslanka's "Sea Dreams" will take place simultaneously at seven locations around the country, including Ithaca College, on Tuesday, April 7. More exceptional still is that you don't even have to be at one of those locations to hear the concert. All you need is a computer and access to the World Wide Web.
"Sea Dreams," a concerto for two horns and wind ensemble, was commissioned by a consortium of institutions organized by Thomas Bacon, a professor of music at Arizona State University. "The audience will include horn players, music lovers, curiosity seekers, and techno-geeks worldwide, many of whom will have had limited exposure to live classical music," says Bacon. "The Internet will also make this event available to people in remote and rural locations throughout the United States and the world where participation in such a live event would be otherwise rare or impossible." Performing at Ithaca College will be horn soloists Bernatis and Alex Shuhan, a member of the Rhythm and Brass ensemble and former School of Music faculty member, and the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble, conducted by Lawrence Dale Harper. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 8:15 p.m. and include works by Copland, Turina, and Ticheli. The performance of "Sea Dreams" will start at 9:30 p.m. The College's Office of Information Technology has been working on the technical arrangements for the netcast, which involves feeding the music to a RealAudio server, then sending it to the Internet via the campus network. ICTV will also record the concert for a future telecast. The home page for the concert netcast and for information on the project is http://concerto.asu.edu/. |
