Trustees Appoint New Members

At its May meeting the Ithaca College Board of Trustees elected three new members, reelected four, and awarded honorary status to another two.

Joining the board for three-year terms were faculty trustee Elaine Leeder and staff trustee Karen Johnson, while student trustee Kyle Johnson '00 will serve for two years. Robert Iger '73, Bob Kur '70, Carol Serling, and Arlene Makransky Wolff '57 were each elected to an additional five-year term. Retiring from active status on the board were Dr. Robert Joynt and Max Levine.

A professor of sociology, Leeder joined the Ithaca faculty in 1977 and has served since that time as coordinator of the Social Work Program. She also chaired the Department of Sociology from 1992 to 1995. She holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University, M.P.H. from the University of California, M.S.W. from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, and B.A. from Northeastern University. The author of the books Treating Abuse in Families: A Feminist and Community Approach and The Gentle General: Rose Pesotta, Anarchist and Labor Organizer, Leeder has published and presented extensively on issues surrounding family violence. She has also been a consultant to a number of mental health organizations and facilities, and had a private practice in psychotherapy.

On campus, Leeder has served on the Tenure and Promotion, Academic Policies, Minority Experience, and Humanities and Sciences Steering Committees, on the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council, and on the board of directors of Hillel. Her community and professional activities include service on the boards of directors of the Tompkins County Task Force for Battered Women and the Economic Opportunity Corporation, and the editorial boards of Violence Against Women: An Interdisciplinary and International Journal and Social Anarchism: A Journal of Theory and Practice. She has received Dana teaching and research awards from the College, been accepted to two National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars, and taught in a "Semester at Sea" program. She is listed in the 1997 edition of Who's Who of American Women.

Karen Johnson has served since 1990 as assistant to the dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences. She provides a variety of administrative duties to assist in the coordination of departmental affairs, supervision of office staff and non-faculty staff, maintenance of records, and the preparation of related reports and documents. She was previously executive secretary to the provost (1985-90), administrative secretary to the dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences (1980-85), and a secretary in the provost's office (1977-80).

Johnson is currently a member of the Ithaca College Staff Council, serving on its Benefits Committee, and of the United Way Committee. In 1991-92 she served on the committee that planned and executed the College's centennial celebration. A graduate of Spencer-Van Etten High School, she has studied at Ithaca College and Tompkins Cortland Community College and has attended management workshops. She volunteers with several community and church organizations.

A resident of Spring Valley, New York, rising junior Kyle Johnson has been actively involved in a number of campus groups and projects. As vice president/internal affairs officer for the African-Latino Society, he organized a Big Brother/Big Sister program. He has been a member of the Campus Life, Diversity Awareness, Leadership Advisory, and Recreation Center Design Committees; served on the provost search committee; and is a Student Government Association representative. As a peer counselor for the Ithaca Opportunity Program, he was part of a four-person team responsible for supervising the social and academic development of 64 pre-freshman students.

Johnson, a sport management major, has put his studies to good use, working as an administrative assistant in the athletics department at Cornell University and serving as the official scorekeeper for Cornell men's and women's basketball as well as a scorer at Ithaca College women's volleyball tournaments. His honors include election to the Oracle Honor Society, being named Office of Minority Affairs Student of the Month, and earning a Gold Award for Academic Achievement from the Ithaca Opportunity Program.

In resolutions awarding honorary trustee status to Levine and Joynt, the board took note of both men's commitment and dedication. Levine was lauded for bringing "his considerable business acumen and uncommon leadership skills to his service as chair of the Resource Planning Committee and as a member of the Executive, Investment and Finance, and Trusteeship Committees." Joynt's service to the board, his colleagues noted, "has been marked by his keen insight, multifaceted experience, and ability to use humor to shed light on complex issues."

Additionally, resolutions of appreciation were approved by the board for departing faculty trustee Laura de Abruña, staff trustee Mark Darling '97, and student trustee Bill Roberts '98.
