"Ithaca has developed a world-class on-line expedition replete with tour guides, QTVR panoramic campus images, and an interactive campus map," says CampusTours in its announcement of the award. "Ithaca's tour is one of the best we've seen thus far." Developed in a collaborative effort by the College's admissions, publications, and academic computing and client services offices, the creation of the tour reflects the College's efforts to make the most of new technologies. "This has been a yearlong project and the award is a credit to all the people who worked on it," says Larry Metzger, dean of enrollment planning. "It was quite a community effort, and that will continue to be so as we expand our capabilities on the Web. That's the nature of it --- it's a very dynamic kind of environment." CampusTours launched its on-line index of college and university virtual tours in April 1997. The index provides a fast and easy means for prospective students to explore potential colleges and universities. It includes virtual tours, interactive campus maps, campus videos, and pictures. Designed to complement traditional college-search techniques, CampusTours provides many prospective students with their first glimpses of campus life. The service is free to the public and is supported entirely by advertising revenues. "More and more high school students are using the Web as a source of information in their college searches," says Metzger. "We're certainly pleased to have this kind of recognition for our site."
