College Community Picnic

August 24

Ithaca College will host a campus community picnic on Monday, August 24, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Convocation ceremony in Ben Light Gymnasium. To be held until 2:00 p.m., the picnic on the Campus Center quad will kick off the new academic year and welcome new students to the College.

The event is sponsored by the College's Community Enhancement Committee, which has been working since April to find ways to build a sense of connection and shared commitment to the College among all its constituencies. Organizers say they want to build upon the success of last spring's "Day of Service" activities.

During the picnic, first-year students will receive a welcoming gift after seeking out College volunteers to ask three predetermined questions-answers to which will help familiarize them with their new surroundings. Organizers say the activity is also designed to facilitate person-to-person interaction between new students and the College's faculty, staff, and administrators. "As the saying goes, 'Many hands make light work,' and we're hoping a lot of folks join us in this event," says committee chairman Mark Darling '97, who is looking for about 150 volunteers. "Come for a half hour or for the entire event-we need your participation, and it will be fun!"

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Darling at 274-1777, Michael McGreevey at 274-3496, or Walter Williams at 274-1155.
