New Series to Begin at Handwerker Gallery

A new lecture series aimed at enhancing understanding art production and art consumption has been created at Ithaca College. First up in the Handwerker Gallery Critical Forum: John Tagg, an expert on the interpretation of photographic images. Tagg’s talk, "Frame Up: The Violence of Photographic Meaning," will be held on Thursday, November 5, at 5:00 p.m. in the gallery. The talk is free and open to the public.

"We are fortunate to have John Tagg as out first guest speaker," says gallery director Jelena Stojanovic. "His work, which draws on both a rigorous social analysis and a sustained theoretical effort, has contributed to a critical rereading of conventional art history, unsettling its disciplinary confidence and raising important questions about the meaning of images."

The Handwerker Gallery Critical Forum aims to expose the different strategies used to produce images in an effort to help art history students and the larger community become perceptive critics. Noted art historians, critics, and scholars will participate throughout the course of the series.
