Ithaca College to Display Panels from AIDS Quilt

Sixteen panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at Ithaca College’s Emerson Suites November 17–19. Members of the public are invited to walk quietly among the panels, each of which has been made to remember the life of a person lost to AIDS.

The exhibition will open with an unfolding ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17; a reception featuring speakers and music will be held at 7:00 p.m. that evening. A closing ceremony is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19.

According to the Names Project Foundation, the AIDS Memorial Quilt—with over 41,000 panels—is the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. It is intended to stand not only for the thousands of people whose names are sewn into the fabric, but also for the sorrow, anger, love, and hope of the people who make the panels. The local exhibition is sponsored by the Ithaca College AIDS Working Group and the Names Project of Syracuse.

In addition to public viewing hours, times have also been set aside for schools and organizations wishing to hold private group viewings of the quilt. For more information or to make arrangements for a group viewing, call Courtney Baker at (607) 375-5621.
