John Confer,
biology, recently received a $90,000 challenge grant from the
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The grant, in collaboration
with the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology, will use
amateurs to compile a national map of the rapidly declining golden-winged
warbler with data submitted through the Internet. Confer will
use student research assistants to determine habitat characteristics
that support high densities of this species at key sites throughout
its range.
Robert Heasley, sociology,
has been awarded the 1998 Corrine Galvin Award, one of several
honors given by the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission.
He was recognized for his work with men on ending rape and battering
and for the work he does on problems related to male socialization
and men in our culture.
Jeanne Mackin,
writing, has been awarded a grant, with a residency, to conduct
research at the American Antiquarian Society. The AAS Fellowship
for Historical Research by Creative and Performing Artists and
Writers provides a stipend and month-long residency at the societys
research facilities in Worcester, Massachusetts. Mackin will
use that time to work on her fourth historical novel. |
