J. Michael Serino, communications, presented a workshop on literary journalism and participated in a panel discussion of journalism textbooks at the 77th annual National College Media Convention in Kansas City in November. A third session, on the adviser/editor relationship at student newspapers, was copresented with Ithacan editor in chief Jay Miller ’99.


The Ithacan has been honored with two gold medalist certificates, the highest ranking in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s annual newspaper critique, for the fall 1997 and spring 1998 semesters. Each year the CSPA, the nation’s largest student press organization, critiques student newspapers across the country in an attempt to recognize excellence and suggest areas for improvement. Of a total of 1,000 possible points, the paper received 926 points for fall 1997 and 929 for spring 1998.


Ithaca College president Peggy R. Williams has been elected a director of Tompkins County Trust Company and its holding company, Tompkins County Trustco, Inc. The Trust Company has been an independent, community-oriented bank since 1836 and is an active supporter of the College and of local economic development.
